CAUSES OF WORLD WAR 1
In 1914, the assassination of a national leader in Eaurope threw that continent into all out war involving almost all of its nations. Since it was said to be through the world, it adopted the name World War. The combatants were Great Britian and France who fought against Germany and Austria. Later on, abrupt conflict made the initial war take the name World War 1. North Carolina had a significant influence on the USA presence in World War 1.

NC IN WORLD WAR 1
Several tar Heel senators and congressmen headed committees that made key decisions about fighting in the war. After the U.S. entry into the war in 1917, the federal gov. drafted all single young men into service. NC provided 86,000 soldiers. More that 2,000 died of disease and wounds. For the first time, North Carolina fought in units with soldiers from other states. To train all these troops, the federal government set up three enlistment camps across North Carolina. There were many different camps.
