Whig control of the state was all but lost when Lord Cornwallis swept through NC with his army in 1781.John Hamilton, a merchant from Halifax, became one of the state's leading Torieswhen he organized the NC Regiment for the British. It marched Lord Cornwallis all the way to Yorktown.The most famous tory was Daivd Fanning.Fannig had been abused and beaten by Whigs early in the war, and he swore revenge. When the British army invaded in 1781, Fanning raised a second regiment for them and became its colonel.Fannings's regiment did not join the British but operated independantly.As the British retreated form Guilford Courthouse to Wilmingto, Fanning attacked and harassed American units whenever and wherever he could find them.
Losing the governor was symbolic of the terrible times NC faced in the years 1780 to 1782. With so many men eigher in the American army of a Charles Town prison, many families were left without protection.British set many bad examples and harassed Americans terribly.
