Most Americans remember that the depression started with the famous stock market crash of 1929. The market did crash, and stocks lost value, ruining many companies and individuals. However, other problems led to the stock market crash. America made money selling arms and other materials to European countries during the war. Europeans paid in gold, and that made lots of money. The ford factory in Charlotte made Model T's very efficiently, but eventually every NC citizen who could afford Model T's bought one. More than 300 NC banks closed during the Great Depression.

    Automobiles-
North Carolina had known about cars ever since about 1905, when wealthy industrialist and physicians brought them home to every town in the state. By 1912, townspeople used them on a daily basis. After World War 1, cars became very important to people in the countryside. The war put more money in peoples pockets. Ford gave them a=tge chance to spend money on an automobile. His company perfected a reliable assembly line porcess that lowered the cost of his basic car, which he called the Model T. Fords company grew so fast that he set up a factory in Charlotte. North Carolinians everywhere drove Model T's every day. After the war, about one tenth of th state's families had a car.

    CAUSES OF WORLD WAR 1
In 1914, the assassination of a national leader in Eaurope threw that continent into all out war involving almost all of its nations. Since it was said to be through the world, it adopted the name World War. The combatants were Great Britian and France who fought against Germany and Austria. Later on, abrupt conflict made the initial war take the name World War 1. North Carolina had a significant influence on the USA presence in World War 1.
    NC IN WORLD WAR 1
Several tar Heel senators and congressmen headed committees that made key decisions about fighting in the war. After the U.S. entry into the war in 1917, the federal gov. drafted all single young men into service. NC provided 86,000 soldiers. More that 2,000 died of disease and wounds. For the first time, North Carolina fought in units with soldiers from other states. To train all these troops, the federal government set up three enlistment camps across North Carolina. There were many different camps.
